Ecojustice Camp for 2026 is announced

Ecojustice Camp returns to the South Shore for the 2026 season. This year’s camp will be held from June 22nd through June 26th, 2026, with an optional overnight on Thursday evening.

We’re run by a nonprofit, and thanks to generous donors we’re able to keep camp fees the same as they were in 2023 — $395 including the overnight!

Both Ngoc Dupont and Dan Harper are returning as co-directors. We’ve begun to hear from last year’s staff, and it looks like many of them will be returning again. We’ll post staff on the Staff page of this site as we get confirmations.

We hope to see you at camp this summer!

Winter workshop

Feeling stuck indoors this winter? Here’s a free winter nature workshop led by one of Ecojustice Camp’s directors:

Woody Plants in Winter: An Intro to iNaturalist

Saturday, Jan. 31, 10-12 noon. Led by Dan Harper, and sponsored by the Cohasset Conservation Trust.

Come explore the winter woods using iNaturalist, a nonprofit online platform that helps you learn about nature while connecting you with other nature lovers. We’ll start indoors with an introduction to iNaturalist. Then we’ll head outdoors, to identify trees and shrubs in Great Brewster Woods and Dean’s Meadow, a 25-acre tract of woodland next to Cohasset Common.

10 a.m., Introduction to iNaturalist, Carriage House Nursery School, 23 N. Main St. Cohasset. Learn the power of the iNaturalist platform, which offers computer vision identification suggestions that are checked by human experts who volunteer their time. If possible, install the iNaturalist app on your smartphone in advance.

11 a.m., Woody Plants in Winter, Carriage House Nursery School, 23 N. Main St. Cohasset, and Great Brewster Woods/Dean’s Meadow. After an introduction to identifying woody plants in winter, we’ll go out and find some plants to identify. We’ll use the classic field guide Woody Plants in Winter by Earl L. Core and Nelle P. Ammons, as well as other field guides. If you have a 10x hand lens, or a macro lens for your phone, please bring it along.

All ages are welcome, but persons under age 18 must be accompanied by an adult. Please note that iNaturalist users under the age of 12 must obtain parental permission to use the platform.

Weather cancellation: Major winter storm cancels. Otherwise, dress for the weather. If it’s super cold or wet, we’ll spend minimal time outdoors, and bring samples indoors to identify in comfort.

As a professional educator 25 years, Dan Harper developed curriculum for a weekly ecojustice class (gr. 6-8), a week-long ecology day camp (gr. 2-8), and week-long half-day workshops for children and adults. He currently is co-director of Ecojustice Camp South Shore.

The Cohasset Conservation Trust is a volunteer, non-profit organization whose mission is the protection of areas of ecological importance, such as marshes, woodlands, and seashores; the promotion of public interest in conservation and smart development; and the preservation of properties of unique historic interest or unusual beauty.

Ecojustice Camp for 2024 is announced

Ecojustice Camp returns to the South Shore for the 2024 season. This year’s camp will be held from August 12-16, 2024, with an optional overnight field trip on Thursday evening.

We’re run by a nonprofit, and thanks to some generous donations we were able to keep camp fees the same as in 2023 — $395.

Both Ngoc Dupont and Dan Harper are returning as co-directors. We’ve begun to hear from last year’s staff, and it looks like many of them will be returning again. We’ll post staff on the Staff page of this site as we get confirmations.

We hope to see you at camp this summer!

Camp safety and wellbeing

Camp safety, and the wellbeing of all campers and staff, remains one of our primary concerns.

In March, co-director Dan Harper, will attend the American Camp Association’s Campwell training. The purpose of Campwell training is to “create a community of well-being at camp by shaping trainings and programs that incorporate the tools, self-awareness, and understanding needed to enhance the experience and safety for all.”

Dan is also serving on the Youth Safety Task Force for another camp, Ferry Beach Camp and Conference Center in Saco, Maine. In that role, Dan has been researching safety and standards of care for camps and similar youth programs.

In this time of rapidly evolving safety standards, Ecojustice Camp South Shore continues working to create a safe and welcoming camp for all participants — campers, junior counselors, and adult staff.

Ecojustice Camp announced for 2023

Camp will take place August 14 through August 18, 2023. We’re still working on age requirements, but approx. grades 2-8. Field trips: We’re planning field trips to the seashore, and to local woodlands. Overnights: We are in the process of finding a site for our Thursday night overnight.

We’ll be based at at First Parish in Cohasset, on Cohasset Common. First Parish facilities include a native plants garden and an outdoor classroom in the woods. Nearby conservation land includes Great Brewster Woods, just a five minute walk away.

Ngoc Dupont and Dan Harper will serve as Camp Directors. Between them, they have over thirty year’s experience in education.

Our sponsor, First Parish in Cohasset, is a liberal congregation with a strong commitment to ecology. First Parish respects the interdependent web of existence, believes all life is sacred, and works actively for environmental justice. We are a multi-racial camp, and an LGBTQ+-friendly camp.
